BP2_2010041_Educational Uses for Blogs

During my research, I have found several educational uses for blogs. I personally have not used blogs but I am looking forward to incorporating them as an educational professional and possibly for a business enterprise.

Blogs are a way that educators can collaborate outside of the school. Educators will have duel access whether it is at their place of abode or professional environment to read, discuss and learn more about current events in education. Information could be shared, articles discussed, questions asked and suggestions made all on the web.

Blogs are also being used to connect classrooms and schools all over world. Students can connect with other students in and out of the classroom. Classrooms can connect with other classrooms. A class can communicate with a scientist. There are endless possibilities of communication. The beauty of this is that all can take place within a school, within a grade level or across grade levels. Weblogs are also being used as portfolios to collect students’ work such as writing samples, works of art, and other school based work.

Weblogs can also be an instructor or a professor’s tool. They are able to post their course content such as a syllabi, assignments and their due dates, links to articles for reference, research and study. Elementary school teachers can use them for lesson plans. Their students and parents would be informed of upcoming quizzes or test, parent-teacher conferences, homework, field trips, and other reminders. This will better facilitate communication between home and school. Blogs also enable teachers to post and update materials with more ease, effectiveness, flexibility and freedom.

"Through the use of blogs, it is suggested that teachers and learners are becoming empowered, motivated, reflective and connected practitioners in new knowledge environments. The balance between individualised and centralised technologies is restored."(Farmer 2005)
